CURRICULUM VITAE
Born in Solarino ( Siracusa) on 14.3.1954, he obtained school leaving certificate in “F.Vivona Liceo” , Rome, on 31.7.1972, 60/60. After matriculation at Medicine and Surgery Faculty of La Sapienza Rome University, he graduated on 15.12.1978, 110/100 magna cum laude. He obtained the Diploma of Specialist in Clinical and Laboratory Haematology in the same University on 27.7.1981, 70/70 magna cum laude and the Diploma of Specialist of Immunohematology in Pisa University on 3.7.1984, 66/70.
As winner of the Competition for Graduated Technician in Tor Vergata Rome University, he took service on 17.3.1986 and, since 1.11.1987, had the Medical Managerial position ( I Level) in Hematology Department at S. Eugenio Hospital that had an agreement with Tor Vergata University.
He was appointed Confirmed Associated Professor in scientific area F07G – Blood Diseases on 23.10.2000 and had the Medical Managerial position ( I Level – ex Hospital Assistant ) in Hematology Department at S. Eugenio Hospital . In the 2002 – 2003 academic year, he moved from MED/15 to MED/05 scientific area in Medicine and Surgery Faculty of Tor Vergata Rome University.
Since 1.4.2003, he takes service in the Transfusion Medicine area of Tor Vergata Policlinic; since 26.04.2004 he takes service as the Director of the Service of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicdne in Tor Vergata Policlinic.
As a student, in the University Transfusion Center of Hematology Chair – La Sapienza Rome University, he was involved in different aspects of transfusion therapy in hematologic patients, expecially if bone marrow transplanted and, later, as visiting doctor, he attended the Centre Departemental de Transfusion Sanguine du Val de Marne (Hopital H.Mondor, Creteil, Paris) and the Central Laboratory of the Netherlands Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service – Amsterdam. In 1986 he was involved in the program of stem cell transplantation of the Hematology Chair of Tor Vergata Rome University , working in collection and cryopreservation and, as a visiting doctor, he attended for a brief period the Transplantation Unit of Rupercht-Karls-Universitat of Heidelberg. He was involved in the National Program of Collection of Umbilical Stem Cells – Italian Umbilical Blood Stem Cell Bank, under the coordination of the Transfusion and Immunology Transplantation Center of Ospedale Maggiore in Milano. In this period he organized a team that produced many publications in the research area of the Hematology Chair, directed by Prof. G. Papa and Prof. S.Amadori
Since 1996 he organized research activity of postgraduates in the Specialization School of Clinical Pathology.
Since 2003 he organized the Service of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine of Tor Vergata Policlinic;
He obtained adequate resources for organizing the different activities of a transfusion service active h24 every day of the year. He organized a new team with particular attention to the study of the immune hemolityc anemias , the role of the apheresis in neurological disorders, the collection, typing and manipulation of peripheral blood stem cells for the national and international protocols in which the Cattedra of Immunohematology, directed by Prof. Giancarlo Isacchi, was involved.
Since 2006 he has the responsibility of Clinical Pathology course for medicine students at “Nostra Signora del Buon Consiglio” , in Tirana
He has been involved in the organizing commitees of several Regional and National Meetings of Italian Society of Haemapheresis and , as speaker, in many National and International Meetings ; in 2006 he was Scientific Director of the updating meeting of the Italian Society of Haemapheresis
